RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
